The Oquirrh Mountain Temple began life with a bang. During the public open house of the temple, on June 13, 2009, lightning struck the statue of the Angel Moroni, leaving parts of the statue blackened. A replacement statue was quickly commissioned and installed just two months later, a week and a half before the dedicatory services would begin. This temple was the fourth built in the Salt Lake Valley. Dedicated in the same year as the Draper Temple, the two were added to help alleviate the strain on the Jordan River Temple, one of the busiest temples in the church.
