Montana is known for big skies, wide open spaces, agriculture and plenty of wilderness. Within driving distance from Yellowstone and Glacier National Park, two of the most beautiful National Parks in the west. It is said that this is where the Old West started. The discovery of gold and the railroad contributed to many settling in the area. There's plenty to see and do, especially for nature lovers. Visit Pictograph Cave State Park where you can examine prehistoric pictographs. The Four Dances Recreation Area offers some hiking trails and views of Billings and the surrounding countryside. The Rimrocks are natural sandstone formations. One side of the temple is built up against these rocks. Yellowstone County Museum is an economical way to see Native American artifacts and history. Yellowstone Art Museum holds a nice collection of art. The Moss Mansion is a great stop if you're interested in seeing 1900's architecture. About 30 miles east of Billings, you can see the Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which is the only remaining on-site visible evidence of the Lewis and Clark expedition. A must see for those intrigued by history.
The Billings Montana temple is the first and only temple in Montana. It's a unique temple with one single spire rising from the middle of the temple. The spire is atop tiered platforms and holds Angel Moroni. The area, against The Rimrocks faced some opposition as some neighbors thought the temple would distract from the natural wilderness. Opposition is not new to the LDS Church and they were able to negotiate final plans that worked well for everybody. Special care was taken to make sure the exterior and rock decor added to the beauty of the rimrock area.
For a dose of nostalgia, stop by Candy Town USA, where you're likely to find your favorite childhood candy, or indulge in an old-fashioned malt. To try the Dutch specialty, Stroopwafel, you'll need to go to Caramel Cookie Waffle. The sandwiches and soups are delicious, but you'll definitely want to try the Dutch delicacy. Harper and Madison also has a fabulous bakery on-site, but the unique combinations used to make the mouth-watering sandwiches will have your taste buds singing. Stella's Kitchen and Bakery starts you off with gigantic cinnamon and caramel rolls as well as many other wonderful breakfast and lunch entrees. As you can see, there's no lack of bakeries in Billings, so you'll probably want to start with dessert first! The Soup Place, of course, offers numerous gourmet soup selections daily, but don't forget about the gourmet sandwiches. Bullman's Wood Fired Pizza creates traditional Neapolitan-style thin crust pizza.
Overall Montana is a beautiful, sparsely populated state with rugged, wild landscapes, great eateries, natural wonders and plenty of choices for learning about history and culture. It truly is a "treasure".
