Fresno seems to sometimes get lost in the shuffle of all the large, well-known California cities. Though it may not have a Disneyland, or Sea World, or Golden Gate Bridge, Fresno can be a great place for a vacation. The surrounding areas, especially up in the Sierra Nevada, are full of some of the most spectacular sites in the United States, and there is plenty to do in the city too, if you know where to look. California has the second-most members of any state in the U.S., with over 750,000 members. California was one of the first places that pioneers were sent to settle outside of Utah.
Dedicated in the year 2000, Fresno was the 4th temple in the state, though there are now seven temples in California. Fresno is one of the smaller-sized temples, and sits on property that also includes a stakehouse, which probably has a greater square footage than the temple does. Of course, the temple is beautiful, especially the grounds, which are immaculate and interesting, with all kinds of different trees, shrubs and flowers, including some stately olive trees. You can sit underneath an olive tree and try to imagine Christ speaking to great groups of people with olive groves nearby, or maybe try to pick through the lengthy parable of the olive tree in the book of Jacob.
While in Fresno, first and foremost you must visit the Sierra Nevada and some of the United States' most amazing national parks. Yosemite National Park is filled with majestic landscapes and dramatic waterfalls, plus many of the famous Sequoia Redwood trees. And of course, in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks you can see the largest living thing in the world, General Sherman. These are both just a couple hours outside Fresno. If you are staying closer to the city, visit the Forestiere Underground Gardens, a unique place created by one man's vision. Or the kids will especially enjoy the Chaffee Zoo and The Discovery Center, a wonderful interactive museum.
There are plenty of great places to eat as well, if you know where to look, and most places are pretty reasonably priced. Try Brahma Bull for some of the most authentic and tasty Indian cuisine around, or Parma, if you are looking for a wonderful Italian meal. Satisfy your breakfast and sweet tooth cravings by visiting either Batter Up Pancakes or La Boulangerie, a french bakery. Or for a place where all types of people can find something to eat, try the Yosemite Falls Cafe. Even if the Fresno Temple is similar to many you have seen before, the attractions make the Fresno area a wonderful place to visit.
