Like most of our gorgeous temples that stand out as beacons across the world, the Oakland California Temple was built on a mountain top that gives incredible views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Take the stairs at the front and leisurely stroll around the rooftop taking in the breathtaking scenery and beautifully manicured grounds. The temple stands out as a landmark in this area.
It was only the second temple to be built in California in 1964. When George Albert Smith visited San Francisco in 1924 he then predicted that growth would expand in this area and a temple would be built in Oakland. The four corner towers is a unique design with only two other temples (Provo City Center & Cochambamba Bolivia) sharing the design. The exterior is just as exquisite as the inside with two 35-foot panels featuring Jesus. This is one of only a few temples that do not feature the angel Moroni statue on top of the temple. There is an on-site Visitor's Center and a gigantic 8500 square foot Inter-Stake Center nearby.
Oakland may not be the first city that comes to mind when looking for a California adventure, but it still has plenty to offer. The city lies between San Francisco and San Jose. Lake Merritt is at the heart of the city and the Lakeside Park and Garden Center at Lake Merritt is a fun place to take in beautiful scenery while meandering though manicured gardens.
