Sutter's Fort is a place to experience the early life of California. The exhibit titled 'Stronghold of Pioneer Memories' celebrates the journey of the overland pioneers who in 1850 made the harrowing trip to California. Numerous artifacts are on display from John Sutter, James Marshall and the Donner (Reed) Party, who spent the winter of 1846-1847 in the Sierra Nevada mountains. One of the survivors, Patty Reed Lewis donated her belongings to the museum in 1946, the centennial of her ardorous journey. Artifacts from the Gold Rush days are also on display.
