In the Book of Mormon, the word Bountiful refers to a fertile area, with "much fruit and also wild honey" (1 Nephi 17:5). The word conjures up thoughts of a land overflowing, with a surplus of the things needed to survive. No doubt as the pioneers began settling the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding areas, they were eager to find places that were green and lush in this desert. This area, just north of Salt Lake City, became the second Mormon settlement in Utah, and was originally named Sessions Settlement before being renamed as Bountiful.
The temple is nestled right up against the base of the Wasatch Mountains, perched like a patient white dove against the dark hillside, visible across Bountiful and the surrounding areas. The floor plan is nearly the same as the Mount Timpanogos Temple, with one main difference being the design of the spire. The Bountiful Temple was one of only two temples dedicated by Howard W. Hunter, during his short time as President of the Church.
Though the temple is close enough to Salt Lake City that visiting there is quick and easy, there are fun things to do in Davis County, including the largest amusement park in Utah, Lagoon, which is filled with thrill rides for all ages, plus has a water park. Another water park in the area is a bit smaller (and cheaper): Cherry Hill also has batting cages, mini golf and other activites. For outdoors types, take a visit to Antelope Island, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake. Or see aircraft of all shapes and sizes at the Hill Aerospace Museum. There's also some great hiking trails around the area, one right across the street from the temple, the Holbrook Canyon Trail.
Once you've finished your activities, visit one of the many unique restaurants in the area. Plates & Palates has a restaurant surrounded by a kitchenwares store. Thyme & Seasons will provide you with a different meal each time you go, depending on what fresh food they have that day. Go to The Mandarin for what might be the best Chinese food in Utah, or head over to Great Harvest Bread for giant sandwiches and a slice of pumpkin chocolate chip bread. Finish off your day with impossibly creamy frozen custard at Nielsen's Frozen Custard. You can visit Salt Lake City another day. Today, enjoy the bounty of Bountiful.
